Migrate your Permalinks without touching htaccess

I have been wanting to change my permalink structure on this blog for awhile now. I have been putting it off because I didn’t want to mess with doing rewrite rules within .htaccess.

My previous permalink structure was /archives/%postid%/, which, for example, resulted in something like http://trai.name/archives/47 – not very search engine friendly. I wanted to change this to /%category%/%postname%/, resulting in something like http://trai.name/wordpress/Migrate_your_Permalinks, but if I just changed my permalink structure in wordpress all of my backlinks would be broken resulting in a 404 error. This would also break any links that have been indexed by the search engines.

What I found was a plugin called Permalinks Migration. You simply go to admin panel->options->PermalinksMigration and add your existing permalink structure. Then you go to admin panel->options->Permalinks and change your permalink structure to what you want. All of your previous posts will redirect to the new permalink structure, and you never have to touch your htaccess file.

Now I just have to tackle this same problem with one of my drupal sites. I think there is a drupal plugin to accomplish the same thing.

A few other plugins that I have installed recently and would recommend are:

All in One SEO Pack

Google XML Sitemaps

Ultimate Google Analytics

What plugins do you recommend?
